 Hi Matthew,
Thanks for the feed back, I appreciate it a lot.  I've seen a lot of Kenwood praise (models vary between the two mentioned here mostly) and have been impressed with the brand for years.  My HT is a Yeasu... but I'm not a brand-loyal type.  Whatever works best is what will catch my eye!  Cliff

Cliff,

Ill vote for what Don and Anthony said. The one I have, Kenwood 710G is a bit more pricey then the V71A, but it has a built in TNC and GPS for APRS use. I like it and am happy with it. Hopefully more folks will chime in that have other brands (ICom and Yaesu). All three make fine radios.

Cliff,

I second Don's vote on the Kenwood TM-V71A.  I have that and it works great for me.  Have used it for cross-banding at some of our events and it's seemless.  It's a broad band receiver so i can listen to Aviation and Marine traffic which gives me giggles.  It has a weather alert feature so that if NOAA sends out a notice the radio will switch to it and play it.

I chose it initially because it was one of the few radios that allowed the mic to be attached to the brain and not the detachble face.  I have the face mounted above my rear view mirror so it's hidden from plain sight.  I didn't want the mic cord hanging down from there and being in my way.  I believe more units are coming that way now.  I used to be a Yeasu only guy but I'm starting to move over to the Kenwood group.  I have several of their products and I find them to be thought out nicely.

So my experience with that radio is 10 out of 10 stars BUT........  Matthew, KN6CEI showed me his next gen.  The Kenwood D-710G.  It has aprs and digital messaging.  He told me that he forgot his phone one day, and through that radio he was able to send his wife(who's not a ham....yet) a text message to her phone that said that.  She then replied that she got the message.  Super cool.   I'm saving my pennies for an upgrade.

Cliff,

I would look hard at the Kenwood TM-V71A. Dual band VHF/UHF 50 watt mobile with crossband(handheld to vehicle repeater) capability. Lots of memory channels. Detachable control head. Port for data communications. Almost perfect for an analog dual-bander.

Hi all,

One of the lessons I learned today (Field Day) is this... my HT isn't gonna cut it for the transmit power and versatility I want!  My Yaesu FT60R is a fine work horse... but a limited one.

I hope to add a mobile to my inventory... and would like YOUR inputs as to best features to look for, the things to watch out for and any suggestions on questions I should answer before I hit the order button!  I am very interested in your opinions about your rig... and I may come back to local owners with more questions once I buy my own.

I am a new Technician... but will eventually upgrade to General.  I currently only hit v-and-uhf via voice... most likely won't chase cw.  I will eventually get into digital, and understand that 40 meter IS something I want to access, because it's useful here in Humboldt.  I'll also want to do emergency message-ing... my primary motivation for radio is supporting emergency communications when things go sideways (...but I enjoy the social aspect of the club too.)

I also like the idea of being able to access the world via a link to my mobile, while i'm carrying my HT down in the canyon.

So... if you have some info to share, I am open.  Suggestions, comments, pitfalls to avoid and 'don't get one without xxxxx' all will help me figure it out.  What do you have that you like? What do you wish you'd done different.

Thanks... I appreciate your help and WILL see you someday! (... and we'll chat on the air!)   Cliff
