Hello All,   We tried a new mode this week on the Wednesday Winlink Net.  It's the Technician class friendly, VARA FM P2P.  I've extended the window for check ins until Friday morning.  Here's a well done video explaining the process.  I hope this encourages more people to try out the net.  Winlink Email P2P | Ham Radio for Preparedness

I've also pasted the report I usually give on Thursdays so you get a feel of what we do.  The address to try and send me a check in is "KG6LHW."   I live near the fish hatchery near Blue Lake.  I'm not in the best VHF location.  However, the only major "coverage hole" I've found so far in the Humboldt Bay area is Sunny Brea.  Please give it a try.
Cheers,Anthony

Hello All,  Here are the results and some extras....
Thank you to the 6 that checked in on this "next level" Winlink mode.
Check ins via VARA FM P2P,
Matthew, Rus and Rod.  Great work!
Check ins via HF
David and Richard.  Sooooo close to working out the bugs.  Potential path problem between David and I.
Check in via Telnet
Randy, KN6NSK.   Welcome aboard, Randy.  Glad you made the push to Winlink.  Looking forward to you getting your Signal Link.
Notable Mention
Jaye helped on working out other people's bugs but wasn't able to check in himself because apparently VARA doesn't play well with Linux.  We might bring him back to the dark side yet.

The assignment was what is your bearing and range to the following coordinates, 41.714618, -72.728531.  Bonus question was what is the significance of that location.
From here near Blue Lake,  my bearing and range is 2,625mi, 071 degrees true.  That location is significant because it's the headquarters of the ARRL, the National Amateur Radio Org.
Nice work to those who worked it out!  I've had two circumstances during local ham events where it was critical to relay lat/long and be familiar with the concept.  One was a medical emergency and the other was a lost ham!!  I look forward to playing and teaching more of this type stuff in the future.

I'm going to leave my computer "listening" for more VARA FM P2P traffic until 0700 Friday.  This will give you a chance to get more practice and to work out your bugs.  This "extra day" assignment is..... What is the magnetic declination (variation in pilot speak), this year, in the Humboldt Bay area?

Finally,  Matt Renner has graciously accepted my appointment as the Net Manager to this Wednesday Winlink Net.  His callsign is KN6CEI.  Thank you, Matthew.
 Blue Lake, Mission Control, Out!
Anthony
