At our meeting, last night, I mentioned that I usually check in to the Winlink Wednesday Net using packet, because I found it faster than using VARA when the signal strength is good. Someone in the room was surprised, and mentioned 1200 baud.  I'm not sure who that was, but I'm using FM wide, which is 9600 baud. The next day I showed up at Woodley Island around noon to see what it was all about. HARC was taking down the masts when I arrived. Someone greeted me and showed me around, and I was hooked. Field Day is more than a contest, it's Amateur Radio's Open House. We want the public and local officials to come and see, not only what we can do, but how we have fun doing it. The site is open to the public on Saturday June 28 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, but *all hams are welcome for the entire event*. You can help out or just show up and hang out - there will be hams doing both. And we'll have 5 radio stations with General or higher licences as Control Operators, so you can work all the HF bands no matter your own licence. Radio contest operations run from 11:00 am Saturday to 11:00 am on Sunday. We begin setting up masts and antennas at 8:00 am on Saturday (coffee and donuts), and start breaking down at 11:30 am on Sunday. There is a potluck dinner on Saturday at 6:00. Official info at https://www.arrl.org/field-day I look forward to seeing you there. 73 Peter -- Michael-Peter Esko W6IES -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There are folded dipole antennas for repeater service as well. Not my preferred style, but something to look into.
