OA Partners,

Please see the below email and attached poster from NWS regarding next Wednesday’s Tsunami Warning Communications System Test. A countywide Humboldt Alert notification will be sent out at 9AM the day of the test. Beginning at 11AM, the National Weather Service will trigger the Emergency Alert System (EAS), resulting in alerts via radio and TV broadcasts, weather radio, and activation of tsunami sirens in some areas.

Please share this information with your networks to ensure that everyone is aware that THIS IS ONLY A TEST!

More information on the March 23rd test can be found in the email below and attached poster.

Caution: This email was sent from an EXTERNAL source. Please take care when clicking links or opening attachments.

The annual Tsunami Warning Communications System test is next Wednesday March 23rd between 11 am and noon. The test will simulate the dissemination of a tsunami warning for Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino counties for a large tsunami wave originating from far away, such as in Alaska or Japan. Examples of events like this in the past include 1964 (Alaska) and 2011 (Japan) when tsunami waves hit our coastline from far away and caused damage.

The test will trigger the Emergency Alert System (EAS) across the three county area of Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino counties resulting in alerts on radio and TV broadcasts, weather radio, and activation of tsunami sirens in some areas. People on the coast may also hear test broadcasts from airplanes. The Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) system for cellular phones will NOT be tested, but in a real emergency it would be activated for a Tsunami Warning. However, county reverse calling systems are expected to be tested the day before or hours before the test to alert people of the coming tsunami warning system test at 11 am.
A poster is attached for more information. Radio and TV advertisements will be running in advance of this test and Caltrans District 1 will utilize their changeable message signs to notify drivers ahead of the test like they have in previous years. Please help us to notify people in the three county area about this test through social media and any other method you may have available. We will be sharing posts on social media over the next several days.
We recommend you take advantage of this test to review what you would do if you were provided notice that a tsunami wave will arrive in the range of 4 to 12 hours. Discuss your plan with family, friends, and coworkers. Confirm that you have multiple ways to receive the warning. Use maps, such as at this link to determine if you are in a tsunami zone. If you are in the zone, then determine where you need to go to get to high ground. If you aren't in a designated tsunami zone, make it part of your plan to stay where you are located. Wait for official notification from local authorities to venture back into the tsunami zone during a real event. More information about Tsunami Preparedness Week and this test can be found at:

Thanks everyone. And remember, this is only a test!
