To help stream line our WFD experience this year we will be having a meet up on the 17th at 1:00pm to iron out any networking, permissions and logging glitches. I was speaking with a couple folks, recently, about my experience with LiFePO4 batteries & chargers, and thought to share that experience. About two years ago, I ordered two, 100Ah LiFePO4 batteries from Bioenno.  A couple days later, Bioenno told me they didn't have those in stock, but could fill my order with four 50Ah batteries, at half the price.  I asked them to let me think about it a few days - NOT!  Each of the four batteries came with a charger.  Their chargers have fans for cooling, which were noisy.  Also, I suspect their chargers are meant for situations where the batteries are used, and then recharged, rather than used & charged continuously, as I do.  So, the 1st charger fan died in about 4 weeks.  When the 2nd fan died a few weeks later, I contacted Bioenno to ask about fanless and more durable chargers. They recommended this one: Victron Energy Blue Smart IP65 Smart Car Battery Charger 12V 15A, Trickle Charger, Float Charger and Desulfator for Motorcycle, ATV, RV, Lithium and Deep Cycle Batteries . It's been in service for me for about 18 months, with no problems at all.  It is very "smart", switching between various modes of charging as my use of the batteries changes. I hope this info is useful for anyone using, or thinking about using, LiFePO4 batteries for their base station radios. I am curious as to anyone's experience with this particular topic. The radio in question is the Chinese-made AnyTone AT-D578UV III Pro which, as of Sunday, is waiting for me to get on the air. The back story is that I am a curious person and like to know stuff, so I asked this friend about the fancy modern bells and whistles and how they impact *privacy*. Why? Well, I had just been doing some digital privacy review work on my own footprint after yet another data breach, and it was on my mind. This is what he said: * * * Not familiar with the radio, but looks like a good package. - For that radio, I would disable Bluetooth and only enable when actively using it. - Disable APRS/GPS unless intentionally needing to broadcast your location to others. Make sure you are disciplined in turning APRS off well before arriving at locations that are sensitive (like your home). Keep in mind if you do utilize APRS, a threat actor could start to develop a 'pattern of life' about you using a site like https://aprs.fi to study your historical locations/movements. -For DMR operation, keep in mind that there is a good amount of metadata is exposed and can be monitored when you are operating on DMR. These include things like registration bursts, roaming scans, slot sync behavior, APRS-DMR checks, and network presence frames Here is an explanation of the DMR privacy threats: Registration bursts When your radio connects to a DMR repeater or network, it briefly sends a digital “hello.” This announces that your radio ID is now present on that system. Roaming scans If your radio is set to automatically find the best repeater, it periodically “listens around” and may briefly signal nearby repeaters to see which one it can use. This can reveal that your radio is active in the area. Slot sync behavior DMR uses two time slots on each frequency. Your radio constantly listens for timing markers so it knows exactly when it is allowed to transmit. This creates a detectable digital timing footprint even when you are not talking. APRS-DMR checks If GPS/APRS is enabled, your radio periodically sends short data packets that include your location and radio ID. These are automatic tracking beacons, even when you do not press the talk button. Network presence frames On connected DMR networks, your radio periodically sends status messages so the network knows you are still online. This is similar to a device checking in with a server — it shows that your radio is present and active. * * * I plan to do some digging as well but wanted to run it by you all first. Thanks for reading and I look forward to any insights. 73 Emily KN6ZWG -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If you do not have it installed we can install and set it up with the club's credentials so there is no cost on the 17th. Organizing and set up for WFD is looser than Field Day. Please respond to this email if you plan on participating this year so we can have an idea of how many stations will be set up. If you can not make it to our meet up on the 17th I will be available for "drop in" setup/testing of the logging and networking with you before the 24th. Just get in touch with me. Everyone is welcome to come to our Winter Field Day event. It is a great opportunity to see radios stations set up in the field and have a chance to get on the air. This year I'd like to emphasize strategy, teamwork and problem solving. Personally, I'd like to help out where I can in getting a few new folk's stations on the air. We will need to be flexible about time spent on certain bands/modes as it pertains to interference on other bands and modes. https://winterfieldday.org/ Participants so far: Friday W6FRI Jacob KO6JNQ Jeanie N6HIU David KN6CEH Randy KN6NSK Anthony KG6LHW Andrew KO6HTT Looking forward to hearing from folks! Message-ID: Hello HARC folks, So Winter Field Day is happening tomorrow at 8:00am and running until 1:59pm on Sunday. We already have a dedicate crew of local hams who plan to operate at our site at Redwood Acres Fairgrounds for most of that period. Anyone is welcome to stop by and also get on the air under our club call sign W6ZZK. But.... if you operate at our site you can not also be a local WFD contact. It would be fun to have as many local hams as possible willing to join WFD from their own shacks, either at their home QTHs or maybe out in the field since the weather looks promising. If anyone who does want to contact our W6ZZK station for WFD it would be great if they would be up for experimenting with differ modes and on different bands. Each combination counts as a new contact. So, an FM and a D-Star 2M contact with say, KE6WLI would count as two contacts. Also all digital modes are allowed except for the WSJT modes (JS8Call is allowed.) Also we can make peer to peer APR and Winlink contacts if anyone is interested. Folks operating as W6ZZK will periodically announce that WFD is happening and to consider monitoring the calling frequency 146.520MHz for quick contacts. No contacts can happen through a repeater. If you'd like to participate in a little Winter Field Day this year check out the rules here: https://winterfieldday.org/sop.php Also use your preferred logging software that will allow you to upload your a Cabrillo or ADIF file. All arrangements to hop between bands and modes has to be done via radio. We can not cal each other up or text to say move to such and such band and mode. Anyway.... I hope you all have a great weekend and think about playing a little radio during Winter Field Day Cheers, Randy KN6NSK -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Any contact that is a "voice" will be a Phone contact even if it is Digital. I had to reread the rules. This is wrong: "So, an FM and a D-Star 2M contact with say, KE6WLI would count as two contacts." Sorry Scott, we will just have to try the D-Star image feature on our Icom radios on 2m.
